In 2007, Christchurch based Dose burst into the international drum & bass scene with a string of well received releases. Now 2 years and over 20 international releases later, Dose is fast proving himself as not only one of New Zealand’s leading solo drum & bass artist’s but one of the rising stars of the drum & bass scene world wide. Dose’s productions cover a wide range of the drum & bass spectrum, from the harder hitting edge to the softer, deeper and more melodic side in which his dj sets portray.

With a debut album set for 2010 an ever busy dj schedule across Australasia and the world, Dose has fast become not just one of New Zealand’s hardest working Dj/Producers but one of the world’s finest djs and Producers.

	CentaSpike A lone ranger based in his home town of Canberra. During the day he’s your average stooge, but during the night, he is a futuristic time traveling ninja assassin, equipped with explosive drum hits and menacing sub sonic death rays used to shatter skulls and liquefy brains. Supplying weapons to such labels as Barcode, Obscene, and Hell’s Basement Recordings, CentaSpike has managed to develop a reputation for producing some of the finest, unsafe, prohibited material known to humankind.
	Faux real From learning how to mix via one dodgy turntable and a discman way back in 2003, FAUX REAL has since become a brazened name across the joint; gracing residencies and spots at such venues as Knightsbridge, Transit, Trinity and Hippo with ever increasing frequency. By frequency, I also refer to the illness he dishes out; from raw Hip Hop through to Dubstep, as well as some proper wonky beats… and still manages to drop Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ without so much as blinking. Add to this a crossfader repertoire to be reckoned with, and you realize this man’s got balance.
	Dr Dred “I started mixing records with my brother dj kaos when I was 14. In the beginning we had 1 turntable and would take turns cutting it up over cassettes and the radio. Kao$ then got a couple of belt drive turntables with rolling pitch control and a fat 6 channel mixers. BLAB, BLAB, etc.” dj dred (myspace)
	Djc (jungle commando) A true legend of the Canberra drum and bass scene. Djc has played along side Dj greats such as Mickey Finn, Aphrodite, Slip Matt, Kenny Ken & Mc Fearless + many more. With well over a decades worth of experience Djc has played some of the most slamming dnb sets ever witnessed in this town, and put on some of the coolest parties.
	Buick With ten years of experience and a wide and eclectic collection of music, Buick is a regular performer at Funk, Hip-Hop, DnB, Dubstep, Dancehall and Reggae events in Canberra. He is becoming increasingly known along the East Coast of Australia as he continues to gain recognition for his talent. Being the only Canberra DJ to win the ACT DMC DJ Championships three years running and go on to represent Canberra at the Australian finals, Buick has also supported an impressive number of international acts and contributed to several local charity events.
	Risky Accidentally stumbling across a drum and bass stage at a festival in 2002, Risky (aka Nerissa Ryan) has been hooked on the sound ever since. It was only a matter of time before she made the transition from punter to DJ. Influenced by a huge spectrum of electronic music, expect dark melodic bass lines and plenty of fresh tunes to keep you glued to the dance floor.
	Skywalker Began collecting vinyl in Melbourne 5 years ago and plays an assortment of drum and bass, dubstep and breaks. He has quickly risen the ranks, and has played at events such as Mingle, Voodoo, Snap!, Villainy and recently at the All Our Friends festival supporting the likes of Concord Dawn, Skool of Thought and Mark Pritchard.
	Mkat One half of the dynamic duo Alibi, Mkat has been on the rise for last couple of years, she specializes in skillfully mixing drum and bass with her own unique style. Mkat is an essential part of the A.C.T drum & bass crew. She has been responsible for promoting and hosting heaps of local parties, crafting wicked mixes and rocking the dance floor at parties such as Mother Nature, Bite Sized Beats, VooDoo, The Clinic, Snap! plus many more.
	Ravs With his roots in Hip Hop Ravs has been looking for the perfect beat for the last 10 years. An avid beat digger with a diverse music taste. Ravs has been holding it down at various local hip hop/breaks events and clubs cutting up wax. He can also be caught behind the decks at various BBoy Jams dropping bombs for the beat conscious to cypher to.
	Aeon – (wearing the hoodie) Started djing in 2006 coming from a musical background of drumming and piano since then have supported Cotti, james zabiela, played prime spots at industrial warehouse party, Suburban music festival, All Our Friends music festival as well as various venues around Canberra, including transit, lot 33, academy, and hippo.
	Shifty Business Shifty Business formed in early 2009 with the idea of bringing mayhem to dance floors across Canberra and beyond. Their sets have always been about having fun, and that philosophy seems to be working. With a selection of mash-ups combing bass driven hip hop, breaks, electro, DnB and dubstep, samples old and new, and tunes from the cheesy to the cool, have proved a hit with the party massive. 2010 have brought Shifty madness to parties such as Industrial, the Suburban Music Festival, Alliance @ Academy and smashed the club room at Warehouse 2010.

2007 Australian DMC Final

1. How long have you been involved in the scene?
Been lurking about at parties since 1997 and started playing out in 1999-2000.

2. How did you get into dj’ing?
One of my older brothers used to take me to raves back when I was around 14/15 and I used to just watch whoever was playing and try and figure out what how it all worked. From there I started going through the vinyl at stores and collecting them, then got my first turntables in 1998.

3. Do you remember your first rave?
Peanuts at the anu – 1997

4. Tell us about your first set?
It was a party called ‘ The Fourth Element’, in 2000. An outdoor rave in the outskirts of canberra, at uriarra crossing. It was the first chance I got to play alongside locals I’d been collecting tapes of, like Dred, JC and Kaos, so that was killer. I played a Jump-up set.

5. What was the first record you bought?
Creative Drum & Bass by Dr S Gachet & DJ SS and luckily I still have it.
It had a few good tunes on it, but the stand out one was ‘The Message’ by shy fx.

6. What types of music do you listen to?
A whole range of stuff, but mainly: Jungle/DnB, Funk/Soul, Hip Hop, Dubstep, Grime, Glitch.

7. What did you have for breakfast this morning?
Lunch

8. Who is your favourite dj apart from me?
DJ Noize [Denmark]

9. You won 3 A.C.T DMC’s in a row, tell us your secrets?
Procrastination and cramming. In that order.

10. Your a pretty busy dj what party’s have you played at this year, any favorites?
It’s still early in the year, but so far the Nextmen, Suburban Music Festival, a couple of Fullmoon Parties and the TJS Boat Party were all fair epic in their own ways.

11. If you were trapped on a deserted island and you could take one thing what would it be?

Almost certainly inspired by his brother Kaos, Dred was not to be out done with plenty of early banging cassette tag team mashups with dj’s like Archie, Stylus, Djc, Buick, Rokit and Direct Drive on projects like Ruff’n’Ready, Tour of duty, Sunday Sessions and heaps more. Rising quickly to the top of the heap Kaos and Dred featured twice on triple j’s mixup. The last 10 years has seen a relentless bombardment of absolute classic mixing skill, from possibly Canberra best ever mix maker, the one and only Dred.

Formerly the drummer, vocalist and songwriter in the punk band The Stupids, he turned to electronic production in the early 1990s. He released two 12″ under the Override alias in 1995-96, as well as appearing on Ninja Tune compilations. In 1998 the debut Klute LP Casual Bodies was released on the seminal Certificate 18 imprint; Fear of People followed in 2000.

In 2001 he established the label Commercial Suicide. This released his own material, including the albums Lie, Cheat & Steal (2003), No One’s Listening Anymore (2005) and most recently “The Emperor’s New Clothes” (2007). All of these albums are double CDs with one drum and bass CD and another of downtempo techno and breakbeat, and received widespread acclaim in electronic music community. The track “Time 4 Change” from “No One’s Listening Anymore” was the last tune played on-air by John Peel.

The label has also released tracks from artists like Amit, Break, Digital, Spirit, Calibre, Hive, SKC and Chris Su, establishing itself as one of the bigger players in drum and bass.

Klute’s style of drum and bass is strongly influenced by techno. It is deep and progressive, with flavours of house, dub and trance, and frequent use of vocals. Although Klute is one of the most melodic and musical producers in drum and bass, his tracks are still typically intended for the DJ and dancefloor; and neither should they be classified alongside the atmospheric or “intelligent” drum and bass popularised by LTJ Bukem, nor should they be considered to be liquid funk.

As well as releasing music on his own label, Klute has releases on Hospital Records, 31 Records, Soul:R, Metalheadz and Breakbeat Science Recordings.

They have released their distinctive sound on legendary labels including Hospital Recordings, Timeless, Renegade Hardware, Moving Shadow, DSCI4 and Commercial Suicide, as well as up and coming labels including Freak, Heavy Rotation, Redlight, Cyanide and BSE Recordings.

International heavyweights such as Grooverider, Goldie, DJ Hype, Ed Rush, Dieselboy, Bad Company, Total Science, Digital, Trace, Klute, Bailey, Fierce, Marcus Intalex, Kemal, Cause for Concern and many others have been playing Concord Dawn tunes for the past few years, proving that its not just homegrown pride that has contributed to their success here in New Zealand.

Concord Dawn have earnt a fearsome reputation for their live performance, with extensive touring in Asia, America, Europe, Canada and Australia. In addition they have featured at almost all of the major dance festivals in New Zealand, including Big Day Out, Phat 05, the Gathering, Alpine Unity, Destination, Rippon, Splore, X air, the X games and numerous University Orientations.

The duo have been musicians and friends since they met at school at the young age of 11. Once they discovered their mutual love for music, they formed a band together and started jamming every afternoon, playing tunes from Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones!  A few years later they fell in love with the rave culture. Evan was given a jungle mixtape from friends at school that awakened his musical passion. It had classics such as Disturbance by Hyper on Experience and tunes from DJ Crystal and Kenny Ken. Around that time, Matt was checking sets and became highly influenced by DJ Aaron, one of the founders of the NZ drum and bass scene. The pair were instantly drawn to this new sound, and began experimenting with creating their own, “Jungle combined a lot of the music we were into at the time. It was a mash-up of Rock, Jazz, Hip Hop, and had the energy of dance music”.

The boys met up again at audio engineering school and began writing tunes. Almost immediately they began working on their self titled debut album for Auckland based electronic label Kog Transmissions. The album was received well by the local audience and they began their first foray into the vinyl market with two 12 inch releases taken from the album. This was followed in quick succession by their second album Disturbance, which was both a refinement and an expansion of the energetic sound they had become well know for. This consolidated their local fan base and began to attract interest from overseas.

Evan then relocated to London for 6 months and upon his return they commenced work on album number 3, Uprising. The exceptional response to the album’s first tunes resulted in their first signings to UK based labels, and their first overseas gigs. Morning light was the first release off the album and was a huge breakthrough tune for the pair. It was both a success in the club and on commercial radio, debuting just short of the top 100 in the UK commercial charts. In November 2002, Morning Light featured on the Mixmag cover CD (alongside other Concord Dawn tunes Aurora and Take Me Away) mixed by John B. It also appeared on DJ Craze’s ‘Live in Puerto Rico’ DVD and on DJ Bailey’s ‘Soul Thunder’ mix CD.

Don’t Tell Me, with it’s energetic lyrics and gritty bassline, was noticeably different to anything the duo had ever done before. Due to it’s originality and dance floor popularity, it got snapped up for the March 2004 Mixmag cover CD, mixed by Grooverider & Fabio. Accompanied by Ninja (another tune from the Uprising album) it also featured on the very successful drum and bass arena mix cd, mixed by Andy C.

Raining Blood, a heavy metal influenced tune, was the third single off the album, which showed the pair’s diverse knowledge in music of all forms. When the much anticipated album finally dropped in 2003, it achieved gold sales in just 3 months, which was unprecedented for a  NZ DnB release.

Uprising won ‘best album’ and ‘best electronic release’ at the 2004 B-Net student radio awards, and the duo were nominated for ‘best electronic act’ at the Vodafone music awards 2004.

Following the release they returned to a hectic DJ schedule to the far flung corners of the world.  In between touring, they found time to begin formulating the ideas for their next release Chaos By Design, which will be the second album from their own imprint Uprising Recordings. Their success has created high expectations from punters worldwide, which has made them step their game up, to create an album which will not disappoint even the harshest of critics. Concord Dawn have matured as artists, finding a harmonious blend between old and new. Chaos By Design incorporates their knowledge of the history of jungle, and maintains their reputation to push their own limits and explore new territory. The album is due for release in March 2006 and will be followed by a full world tour, exporting the boys to countries in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and their hometown New Zealand.

Canberra’s wickedest dj returns for VOODOO this Friday night. Dj Kaos is one of Canberra’s most influential turntablist/party promoters.

Nik (Dj Kaos) started mixing and scratching in 1995 with his little brother Dred. Best known early on for his unbelievable 3 decks mix-ups, Nik’s elite turntable wizardry and legendary foot scratching technique won him the 1999 ACT DMC title. He has been on triple j’s mixup several times and played at some of the biggest events around the country.

Kaos has over a decades worth of djing and promoting experience in Canberra and is responsible for events such as: First Contact, Eight Ball, Crowd Control 1 to 6, 1st – 4th Elements, Homebase, Mass Soundsystem, King of the Beats, Theme Park, Medicine Drums, Tactic 1 – 4 plus tons more.

Bite Size Beats is one of Canberra’s hidden treasures, located at Chifley in café/bar Bite to Eat. This extraordinary nite out is the vision and mission of the one and only Chils.  Inspired by the venue itself Chils pulled together his resources and friends to make this event a reality.

Bite Size Beats hosts a high calibre of DJs; I’d just like to mention a few of these:

• MKat – A dedicated and exceptional Dj who rocks the party with wickedly rolling beats n bass.
• Buick – Turntablist extraordinaire.  Killer tunes and dope skills.
• Centaspike – Writes and Djs some of the most sinister beats you’ll ever hear. Original colossal tunes that push the boundaries of dark!

Bite to Eat boasts delicious chips, a fine selection of drinks and a chilled out atmosphere.  It is by far one the most enjoyable venues to embrace the sounds of Drum n Bass and Dubstep.

I have never been to this festival before and my only expectation was that it was going to be fun.  I have not been to a ‘forest party’ for many years and I have fond yet rather hazy memories of good forest times past.

As we travelled along the dirt road towards the sounds of music we were like children in a free candy store, pepped up on sugar and ready to explore. We parked our car among the masses and enthusiastically entered the festival grounds.   The adventure began by following a trail of brightly coloured rope lights and lanterns which hung majestically amongst the tree tops.  These lights led off to 4 different areas that were scatted amongst the forest. The areas included a market place and 3 music stages all of which provided a welcoming, inclusive and visually stimulating atmosphere.

As we explored the forests sculpture garden of totem poles, and took in all the sights and sounds we ate some delicious wood fired pizza.   We wandered around with pizza in hand discovering each space one by one.  Fire Dragon was the first to be stumbled upon a fully enclosed acoustic and chill out space, where you could listen to anything from chilled beats to live jazz .  Air Dragon the next, an electronic dj stage cranking out Psy-Trance with its very own flying dragon hovering above the crowd.  Last but by no means least, my personal favourite Earth Dragon aka the Drum & Bass and Dubstep stage.

Each area was as equally interesting and enticing as the next.
There were many sites to enjoy from gnomes to laser beams, even a random wheel chair made it to the party.

Fortunately for me I arrived at the Earth Dragon space right on time to witness Crooked Sound System and MC Harlequin perform. These guys played an absolutely wicked set featuring their own unique and original style of Dubstep which had the crowd entranced and jumping.

Following the Crooked Sounds Crew was Dj Dred who mixed up a smooth batch of fresh Drum & Bass.  What can I say apart from mad skills and massive tunes!

Buick and I played a freestyle, old skool, Drum & Bass set which I must say, was extremely fun, funky and very appropriate for the early hours of the morning.  After mixing for an hour 1/2 and fighting off sleep deprivation I ran away from the decks to warm my hands by the fire drums and to watch Buick skilfully mix up a delightful selection of my favourite tunes.

Djs Buick and Dred closed off the evening by playing a sublime set of chilled out Dubstep as the sun began to creep up above the trees.

My expectations of this party were totally blow out of the water, fun is an understatement, this event was freaking awesome!  It had it all, each area was professionally set up with quality, sound, lighting, Djs, performers, entertainment, and visuals to boot.

As far as I’m aware this was the first time Drum & Bass and Dubstep had been included in the array of musical delights that the festival showcases, it truly added a crucial element to this spectacular evening.

Dragon Dreaming Festival is a well planned and executed event that’s certainly worth a look.
