After stunning audiences across Australia with his devastating turntable massacre over the 2010-2011 new year season, Los Angeles producer-DJ Gaslamp Killer returns to Sydney with his uncategorisable show deftly blending Turkish psych, southern Crunk and the most bone shattering Dubstep youre likely to hear, all the while hosted with the best microphone technique of any DJ out there.
In late 2010, GLK brought listeners in to his world with his Death Gate EP for Flying Lotus Brainfeeder label. Since then, he has been touring the world, adeptly rocking any party be it a European electronic music festival like Sonar or a sunny afternoon bash like Do-Over.

Gaslamp Killer returns to headline his own show that is immediately more intimate and likely to be just as packed out as previous performances so don’t miss out on tickets to this one.

A huge supporting list including: Master of Ribongia (SYD), Paqman (MEL), Roleo (SYD), Onetalk (CBR/SYD), Deaf Cat, 2Fuddha, JPS (MEL), Faux Real & live visual art from Think About Surgery will make it an unmissable night!

Through her musical creations, she is able to fuse vintage sounds with progressive styles intosomething unique.

Her music has been recognized and praised by the very best in avant-garde and mainstream media.TOKiMONSTA has been featured on various large scale radio programs such as: BBC Radio1, NPR,BBC World Service, J Wave (JP), Studio Brussels (BE), Radio Nova (FR), KCRW (USA) to name a few.Subsequently, she has been featured in DJ Mag, Pitchfork, XLR8R, URB, Paper, LA Times, SPIN, and is listed as the #1 female DJ in Los Angeles by LA Weekly.

Not only has she caught ears of many as a different dimension of Los Angeles-based music, TOKiMONSTA is notably the first female to join crew/label BRAINFEEDER headed by Flying Lotus— celebrated as the most exciting LA music label by LA Weekly. In addition, she is also a 2010 Red Bull Music Academy alumni, allowing her to join the ranks of other elite taste maker alumni. Her live performance is engaging as well as intricate—using a laptop, other pieces of instrumentation and multimedia to orchestrate a truly interactive experience. She is a fearless and energetic performer who tours regularly around the world from LA to NY, London to Tel Aviv, Singapore to Tokyo. Some notable past performance were at DEMF, Sonar Barcelona.
Downlink has been punishing dancefloors all over the planet with his heavy brand of dubstep.

With roots in Jungle & DnB, he is no stranger to the vile side of subsonic dance music. Growing up in a cold industrial town in British Columbia, Canada, he was first introduced to dubstep in 2007 and soon after took to production. While maintaining an appreciation for the sparse and laid-back vibes of the old school, Downlink set out to explore a more frantic, adrenaline fuelled style, influenced by everything from heavy metal to astrophysics. It wasn’t long before his music found its place on Rottun Recordings. While consistently coming up with sick material time after time, he has gained DJ support from all of the biggest names in the scene.

His success on the Beatport charts has been extraordinary. He managed to hold down 4 of the top 10 chart spots at one time and his songs “Emergency” and “Crippled Camel” hit #1 and #2 respectively. Along with Excision on the Subsonic tour, he slayed huge crowds across America, leaving people in awe time after time with his DJ sets. Downlink is not one to be pigeon-holed and is constantly on a quest to evolve and refine his sound. With this in mind, one thing will always remain constant – a pure unadulterated heavy listening experience…

Escha’s dj bio taken from the True Jungle Souljahs archive.

Escha started listening to electronic music back in 94, soon after he and his friend scraped enough money together to by some cheap ass belt drive turntables from Cash Converters. At about the same time his sister came back from the UK with her boyfriend in tow and it turned out this boyfriend was a bit of a Junglist and decided to buy some 1200’s. As Escha had always been into hip hop, he was instantly drawn to the Jungle sound and was lucky enough to learn fundamental mixing techniques from this old school Junglist

After months of practice Escha had his first gig at his friend’s house party where about 150+ people decided to turn up, including some well know DJ’s from Sydney and the dog squad. After getting props from the Sydney DJ’s and his mates for his skills, and almost having his sister’s boyfriend’s turntables confiscated by the cops, he really got into the DJ culture and especially Jungle Drum and Bass.

Escha continued to mix DnB for several years playing at many Canberra night clubs, Raves and also in Sydney. Escha’s most memorable gig was held at the National Aquarium with 1000+ people in attendance. There are even rumours of Escha killing fish with his baselines that night. Escha doesn’t confirm or deny anything.

alex getting hugs from cris

In 2000 Escha travelled to London, the home of Jungle, to experience the culture first hand. While only playing one DJ set in London, Escha spent a majority of his time and money looking for and buying DnB records all the way from Bristol to Brighton, especially the old school Jungle that Escha had been raised on.

After many FIED nights in London, Escha returned to Canberra in 2002 and hooked up with long time friend DJ Paf from Synapse and was helping promote DnB in Canberra once again.

More recently Escha has hooked up with fellow Junglists, Ben Jammin’ and Eska who run True Jungle Souljahs and supports most of the international DnB artists that come to Canberra.

New Zealand born and raised Kim De La Haye aka DJ de la Haye, has been one of the most hardworking and energetic members of the Brisbane broken-beat scene, since moving to Australia in 2000.

With track selection, mixing, and a smile that sets any dancefloor ablaze, de la Haye is a regularly booked DJ, not to mention one of the scene’s leading promoters. Before discovering jungle in ’96, Kim’s early musical influences ranged from soul, funk, reggae and hiphop to rock, punk and metal. Perhaps in this, we find the blue print for her versatility. Whether its dub or ragga vibes, driving techstep darkness, complex drum choppage, or rolling liquid sounds, de la Haye’s drum’n’bass sets offer something for all tastes. All of this has not gone unnoticed by other promoters, as de la Haye continues to amass an impressive DJ resume. From being a regular at local events (eg Rude Bwoyz, Phat Albeats, BassCreepz, Praxis, Dub Thugs), Kim’s cross-genre appeal has also seen her feature at many non-DnB raves and festivals (eg Earthcore, ReAnimator, Mayhem, System 6, Island Vibe Reggae Festival, BBQ Breaks, Shhh, Deliverance, Manifest and Blah Blah Blah). She has played all around Australia and New Zealand, as well as opening the Feline stage at the 2009 Sun and Bass Festival in Sardinia Italy and the 2010 Paradise in Bali Festival.

What cannot be understated is Kim’s massive contribution to promoting in the Brisbane broken-beat community since 2002. In 2003 she formed the female DJ crew ‘Junglettes’ , in 2004 began the dub and jungle nights ‘Ragga’d’ and ‘Offshoots of Reggae’, and in 2005 started the hard DnB/Dubstep night ‘Rukus’ alongside SpeakerWrath. Through both collaborations with other local crews and on her own, de la Haye’s events have hosted most of the international DnB acts that have come through Brisbane over the past 7 years. This incredible and often solo effort has been a driving force and integral part in the growth of this scene in Brisbane. De La Haye also manages the Brizbass event mailing list and local broken-beat website http://www.brizbass.com/ that she founded in September 2008. Recently de la Haye branched out playing hiphop and dubstep sets, however her main focus for 2010 is to lend more time to production. Given the accomplishments and talent shown so far, where she will go from here no one can predict.

International acts de la Haye has supported: Kenny Ken & MC Foxy, Ruffneck Souljah, High Contrast, Evol Intent, Chris.SU, SKC, Calyx, Dom and Roland, J Majik, Future Prophecies, Noisia, DJ Bailey, Roc Raida, Black Sun Empire, The Body Snatchers, Phace, DJ Storm, D-Bridge, Concord Dawn, Shimon, Mindscape, Ed Rush & Optical, Break & DJ Fierce, TeeBee, Klute, Silent Witness and Squire, Jade, The Upbeats, Dose, Shapeshifter, Zed Bias, State of Mind, Spor & Ewun, DJ Hype & Daddy Earl & Xample, Nymfo, Audio & Robyn Chaos, Flying Lotus, Roni Size & Dynamite, Gravious, Logistics & Cyantific, Bryan Gee, TREi, Axiom, Bailey, Kito, An-Ten-Nae, Salmonella Dub, DJ Presha, Kryptic Minds, ShockOne & Phetsta, Instra:mental, DZ, A-Sides, Strife (NYC), Sook (The Abyss), Cern, Tango

With in tinnitus-inducing clothing, it’s always hard to miss Will Styles.

Classically trained from a young age, Will grew up playing violin, piano, French horn, xylophone, timpani, drums and glockenspiel. As a 16-year-old grunge fan, he discovered dance music whilst wearing 2 flannies, a Skid Row t-shirt and torn jeans. By the end of the night he was on the dance floor, waving his flannies around his head. He was hooked to the beats. Will tried and failed at mixing his first record just hours later. Since then, he has always endeavoured to play the rave, but it was only with the advent of DubRave that people began responding positively.

In 2001, he started FunkTrust with a couple of mates. It was all part of a plan to drink beer, meet girls and pay off gambling debts. Every Thursday for 6 years, FunkTrust played party-style hip hop, original uncut funk and block rocking’ breaks at The Globe and The Hunter Bar resulting in a statistically improbably high rate of Friday absenteeism. Artists who played at the club include the Nextmen, Malente, Mickey Finn, DJ Food, Freddy Fresh and Fort Knox Five. This success lead to Will’s first taste of festival whoredom: Big Day Out, Splendour in the Grass, Parklife, Future Music Festival, Field Day, Shore Thing, Sydney Festival First Night, Falls Festival. Will played Good Vibrations in a full panda suit, his FunkTrust-heterosexual-life-partner, Learned Hand, donned a full monkey suit. Will had arrived; he was rubbing shoulders with the great and good and entertained no-less a pop star than Sandi Thom (no, really.)

After a 2 year stint presenting Tuesday Sunsets on Sydney community station FBi, Radio FunkTrust started in 2007. Will & Aaron were invited to play before Silverchair at Triple J’s One Night Stand in Cowra, and of course brought their dancing panda with them. After the 2008 Hottest 100 broadcast, with at least one million people tuning-in, he managed to spill a full beer into a million-dollar mixing desk… It broke the desk but he didn’t get fired. Radio FunkTrust finished at the end of 2010 on a high, every week they reached 70,000 people with nothing better to do on a Friday night.

Will Styles - Get your tickets from Mostiqs

DubRave started in December 2009, and having thrown parties all over Australia, they have landed a regular home at Sydney’s Chinese Laundry. It was launched with the same underground aesthetic, and the same flagrant disregard of genre that made FunkTrust such a success. This time, however, the sounds focused on bass music, particularly the nascent sound of dubstep. They’ve hosted parties for South Rakkas Crew, Doorly, DJ MK (Dizzee Rascal’s tour DJ) and Nu:tone & MC Wrec. The biggest nights always featured local line-ups, a testament to the strength of the brand and the depth of the talent.

At the start of 2011, Will represented the DubRave sound around Australia with MC Hayley Boa on the Boiler Room tour. Their show injected bass music directly in the ears of over 100,000 ravers in just 6 shows, including 2 capacity performances in Sydney of 35,000 each.

Chosen to mix Ministry of Sound’s “Sound of Dubstep” compilation alongside Israel’s Borgore, Will is to tour around Australia throughout May and June. Appearing on the mix; Paul Mac personally approved Will’s remix Itch-e & Scratch-e’s Sweetness and Light; the first remix allowed since its release in 1995. The compilation features tunes from Chase & Status, Skrillex, Rusko and Sub Focus, plus original Will Styles productions and tunes from his label, DubRave. Will’s partner in DubRave is MC Shureshock, Australia’s No. 1 MC, a certified raver and all-round party rocker.

Hailing from Perth the epicenter of the Australasian drum and bass scene, ShockOne aka Karl Thomas is fast becoming one of D&B’s major talents.

He writes his music in a sweat box of a studio in an industrial area with air con blasting through a random door. He grew a beard this year which has been very well received.

2009 has seen Shockone come of age with the release of ‘The Shockone EP’, featuring the chart topping ‘Polygon’. This tune received major air play world wide with high rotation play listing on Australia’s Triple J radio and Radio 1′s Annie Mac penning it as ‘The biggest drum and bass tune out’. The EP’s three drum and bass tunes achieved the top 3 spots on beatports drum and bass chart, and ‘Adachigahara’s Theme’ stayed at number 1 on the dubstep chart for over a month. Following this Shockone released his remix of the Brookes Brothers epic ‘Crackdown’ on Viper recordings ‘Acts of madmen LP’ which was labeled “Album of the Week” on Zane Lowe BBC Radio 1. Shockone’s collaborations with Phetsta, ‘The Sun 2009′ and ‘Cyclones’ have also received high rotation on radio world wide.

2009 also saw Shockone take out Best tune of the year at the Perth dance music awards for the third year running with ‘Polygon’, as well as best drum and bass dj and best broken beat producer for the second year in a row.

2010 is set to be a colossal year for ShockOne with a full-length album in the works

By combining sound and force with weight, the Bassnectar experience engulfs the senses. It is as physical as it is auditory; the adventure has no rules, no limitations, and no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange or the classic with the cutting edge.

Bassnectar is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginary. Spanning the spectrum of sonic style, the music covers every genre imaginable and smashes it all into a synthesis of intense, wobbling basslines and hypnotic soundscapes.

Whether remixing, collaborating, writing, DJing, performing live, or working on constant social networking, Bassnectar’s music is the lure and social impact is the sincere intention. According to Ashton, “We are so blessed, and so deeply fortunate to be alive and awake right now…it’s a basic truth, but it’s very powerful. I think privilege confers responsibility, and Bassnectar is a reflection of that opportunity to give back; the motion of my cells bouncing back at the world.”

bassnectar!

Bassnectar’s most recent releases are Art of Revolution (2009), Cozza Frenzy (2009), and Timestretch (2010). Through his self-run Amorphous Music label and Bassnectar Labs studio, he has remixed/collaborated with the likes of KRS-One, Perry Farrel, Fever Ray, Spearhead, STS9, Buckethead, Tappa Zuki, and Zumbi of Zion I; as well as various remix projects with producers such as Z-trip, Diplo, BT, 6Blocc, DJ Vadim, and RJD2.

Along the way, the Bassnectar tour has headlined stops at some of the most noted venues in the country, touring with his own custom rig by PK Sound. After a long line of sell-out shows, Bassnectar never fails to gather monster crowds on the festival circuit. Some of his most celebrated sets took place at the nation’s top festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, ACL, Bonnaroo, and Ultra Music Festival. Whether performing at an intimate club or at a major festival, Bassnectar
energizes audiences with an experience unlike any other.

Sonny Moore aka SKRILLEX! has taken dubstep by storm over the last 6 months, but who is this skillrex?..

“I’ve been deep into electronic music my entire life. The first records I ever owned were ‘Fat of Land’ by the Prodigy and ‘Come To Daddy’ by Aphex Twin,” raves Sonny Moore, better known as emerging electronic visionary SKRILLEX. “Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails were also early influences. I’ve been dabbling in making electronic tracks on programs like Fruity Loops since I was 14 years old.”

For fans of Moore’s past incarnation as the lead singer of hardcore band From First To Last, the bass bin crushing dance floor beats of SKRILLEX might come off as something of a shock. But SKRILLEX is part of a new generation of artists that refuse to be restricted by preconceived notions or outside expectations. “Genre has never been important to me,” he insists. “I’ve never thought about music that way.”

Describing his current sound as “a mix of dubstep, electro and glitch all thrown together,” new SKRILLEX release “SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES” reflects all of the above and beyond. The uplifting post-trance synth melodies of “ALL I ASK OF YOU” (featuring the soaring vocals of Penny) stands in stark contrast to the face-melting electro bass blasts of the massive electro-dubstep hybrid “ROCK N’ ROLL (WILL TAKE YOU TO THE MOUNTAIN).”

“I’ve listened to so much music for so long, it’s more about instinct than influence,” Moore explains about his sonic inspirations. “Coming up, I was into a lot of artists on the Warp record label like Autechre, Squarepusher, and Aphex Twin, so SKRILLEX tracks are inclined to have more changes than most dance tracks normally have. I can draw influences from almost anything. I just like to mess around and create cool new sounds and noises. I just go where the music takes me.”

After just one hugely successful independent release, “SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES” is the first SKRILLEX release on Big Beat Records, in conjunction with fellow electronic revolutionary Deadmau5’s freshly minted Mau5trap record label.

“For years, the artists needed the record labels. I don’t feel that way at all,” Moore stresses. “SKRILLEX has been 100% independent until now. I think it’s so important to be self-sufficient as artist. Working with Atlantic / Big Beat, and cooperating with Mau5trap, allows us all to work as a team and expand on what’s already been built.”

Following its release on Beatport, the 9-song EP dominated the charts on the site, with the title track claiming the site’s #1 slot (the first time a dubstep track has ever done so), 8 songs breaking into the top 10, and multiple tracks claiming the #1 slots on several of the site’s subgenre charts, including Dubstep, Electro House, Progressive House.

Aside from the immediate success of “SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES,” SKRILLEX has also made a name for himself as a highly sought-after remixer. He’s already produced officially commissioned remixes for such A-list artists as the Black Eyed Peas (“Rock That Body”), Lady Gaga (“Bad Romance” and “Alejandro”), and La Roux (“In For The Kill”).

I gave away my first EP on my manager’s website, just so people could hear the music,” he enthuses. “It was downloaded by the thousands in just a couple of months, and it hasn’t let up since. That’s all the inspiration I need to keep making music.

“SKRILLEX can be anything I want it to be,” he continues hopefully. “There are so many different avenues for music now. Video games, movie scores — the possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

They met with several years’ experience already under their belts and formed in early 2009 with the idea of bringing mayhem to dance floors around Canberra and beyond. Their sets have always been about having fun, and that philosophy seems to be working.

Their mash-ups of bass driven Hip-Hop, Breaks, Electro, DnB and Dubstep, with samples old and new, and tunes from the cheesy to the cool, have proved a hit with the party massive. Some of the biggest gigs include headlining the SKI SEASON LAUNCH PARTY and ONELOVE at Jindabyne, and rocking the stage at FORESHORE SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL two years in a row. Some of their favourite gigs they’ve brought Shifty madness to are INDUSTRIAL, the SUBURBAN MUSIC FESTIVAL, and smashing the club room at WAREHOUSE 2010.

Aside from the festival and high-profile parties, they have played a host of gigs for some of Canberra’s biggest promoters including Kicks Entertainment, Pang! ACTDnB and UniVibes.

They also promote a range of nights including VOODOO and +ONE. They also broadcast REZINATE, a dedicated DnB / Dubstep / Breaks show every Wed from 9-12 on 87.8 UC-FM with co-hosts DJ Dred and Faux Real.

With an increasing fan base and a burning love for the music they play, things can only get better. If you didn’t know, now you do. They are, Shifty Business!
