You have been in Australia for a while now and played at a stack of parties. Which one has been your favourite so far?
Their have been so many parties that I have been honoured to play at and help promote, Such as 4th Quadrant which was the first crew to introduce DNB Boat Parties to Sydney, No Frills as we where the only crew in Sydney putting on Monthly DNB parties. Also the other promoters I have played for like, Foreign Dub, Chinese Laundry, Nasty Tek, Loaded Dice.

Who is the favorite International or Local you have played with.
I have been blessed to play with some of the premier locals and internationals that have come past, their have been a lot. Andy C for obvisous reasons, Survival was pretty special also, commix, Chook, Evol Intent and the special one which was last yer on my birthday Phace.

MC Antic will be joining you in Canberra. How did you and Antic come to know and work together?
Antic and I have known each other for a long long time, I used to watch him when he played at a party called Connect 4 and from their other big parties, his mic presents is just brilliant !!! He is not their to overtake but more compromise with what I do, which is hard to find these days, Another one to look out for though is MC Rush, great guy and very talented.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Well I don’t wish to answer this as everyone does, but I do need to get into the studio and start laying some tracks down, I am crap house at doing stuff like this and do not have patients to sit their for 7-8 hours trying to vibe out on the one track, but I have too I know hahahahahahaha. Apart from that do some more shows around Oz mi thinks.

What first sparked your interest in the drum & bass genre?
I first heard drum & bass through a school colleague in 1996. He was a DJ at the time and he used to play his mix tapes in the common room. I remember walking in one day and hearing the amen break tearing out over some deep subby bass with little vocal snippets echoing over the top and I was just drawn to it so I had to ask if I could borrow the tape. I was pretty much a fan ever since. Hearing drum & bass in a club for the first time is another story entirely but that is what really solidified drum & bass into my musical vocab.

How long have you been making music?
I’ve been producing music since about 2002 but its only been over the last 2-3 years that I’ve been really getting into it. Listening to how the sound has evolved over the years really helped push me into the right direction in terms of learning the technical side of production such as EQ, compression etc.

Who are some of your favourite producers and what inspires you?
Off the top of my head some of my favourites have to be Alpha Omega, Source Direct, Photek, Konflict, Usual Suspects, Digital, Loxy & Ink, Future Cut, C4C, MISTI:CAL, Break, Fierce…. I guess I like it all in one way or another. As far as inspiration goes I think my main source comes from knowing what I like to hear on the dance floor myself. I also go through phases where I’m cycling through a full spectrum of vibes such as one day I’ll feel like kidnapping someone, murdering them and dragging their body out into the woods so a tune like “Termination” is the result, then the next day I might feel like being nice to everyone and not even toot the horn or get angry when someone cuts in front of me while driving so a tune like “Fear in itself” is the result.

Over the last couple of years you’ve had a bunch of releases with labels like Soul Deep Recordings, Intelligent Recordings and Silk Recordings. What else is on the horizon?
I have a little Jungle number coming out on Bass’Flo Recordings which is my latest signing so there maybe a few more Jungle bits are on the horizon.

What do you get into outside of producing music?
Battlefield Bad Company 2  ….and soon to be Battlefield 3 so don’t expect many tunes from me when this game comes out.

You have been around for a bit, when did you start djing and how long have you been making tunes?
I first started playing around on my brothers decks when i was about 14, and started dabbling in production with friends like, Fourthstate and Tidy around the same time. But only the last 5 years i have really started taking producing seriously.

Who are some of your influences both now and when you were starting out?
Starting out i was strongly influenced by jungle tapes i aquired off my brother – dj ratty, micky finn, hype, roni size. These days i get influence from all sorts of people, from bb king to dj spooky.

How did your release on Inna Riddim come to be?
The Lads heard a couple of my tracks online, we all met up properly and I went in and played a couple of times on their radio show on bondi fm, later on they hit me up saying they were really liking my tunes and want to release a few!

You run a regular night in Sydney called Reload. How would you best describe the night and what kind of sounds are you showcasing?
Reload is a fun, friendly awesomeo regular local night (one of the only ones) that knowledged heads and artists really appreciate. It showcases the best in all things BASS music, in a truely underground and natural perspective. We basically cover Jungle to Dubstep with a focus on Grime.

What can we expect from you in the future?
I got a new single coming out on an INNA RIDDIM compilation, collabs with FRAKSHA, SCOTTY HINDS. A few beats coming out on SMASHBROS E.P, Beats for GARGOYLES new album, collabs with SWARMY and LEANE RUSSO and also the next RELOAD - grime international - TEDDY MUSIC! SEP 3RD! and of course more reloads were u can expect to see more of your fav canberra djs playing at!

Downlink plays Dub by Day at Trinity bar on June 26th

Downlink has been punishing dancefloors all over the planet with his heavy brand of dubstep.

With roots in Jungle & DnB, he is no stranger to the vile side of subsonic dance music. Growing up in a cold industrial town in British Columbia, Canada, he was first introduced to dubstep in 2007 and soon after took to production. While maintaining an appreciation for the sparse and laid-back vibes of the old school, Downlink set out to explore a more frantic, adrenaline fuelled style, influenced by everything from heavy metal to astrophysics. It wasn’t long before his music found its place on Rottun Recordings.  While consistently coming up with sick material time after time, he has gained DJ support from all of the biggest names in the scene.

His success on the Beatport charts has been extraordinary. He managed to hold down 4 of the top 10 chart spots at one time and his songs “Emergency” and “Crippled Camel” hit #1 and #2 respectively. Along with Excision on the Subsonic tour, he slayed huge crowds across America, leaving people in awe time after time with his DJ sets. Downlink is not one to be pigeon-holed and is constantly on a quest to evolve and refine his sound. Escha started listening to electronic music back in 94, soon after he and his friend scraped enough money together to by some cheap ass belt drive turntables from Cash Converters. At about the same time his sister came back from the UK with her boyfriend in tow and it turned out this boyfriend was a bit of a Junglist and decided to buy some 1200’s. As Escha had always been into hip hop, he was instantly drawn to the Jungle sound and was lucky enough to learn fundamental mixing techniques from this old school Junglist

After months of practice Escha had his first gig at his friend’s house party where about 150+ people decided to turn up, including some well know DJ’s from Sydney and the dog squad. After getting props from the Sydney DJ’s and his mates for his skills, and almost having his sister’s boyfriend’s turntables confiscated by the cops, he really got into the DJ culture and especially Jungle Drum and Bass.

Escha continued to mix DnB for several years playing at many Canberra night clubs, Raves and also in Sydney. Escha’s most memorable gig was held at the National Aquarium with 1000+ people in attendance. There are even rumours of Escha killing fish with his baselines that night. Escha doesn’t confirm or deny anything.

In 2000 Escha travelled to London, the home of Jungle, to experience the culture first hand. While only playing one DJ set in London, Escha spent a majority of his time and money looking for and buying DnB records all the way from Bristol to Brighton, especially the old school Jungle that Escha had been raised on.

After many FIED nights in London, Escha returned to Canberra in 2002 and hooked up with long time friend DJ Paf from Synapse and was helping promote DnB in Canberra once again.

More recently Escha has hooked up with fellow Junglists, Ben Jammin’ and Eska who run True Jungle Souljahs and supports most of the international DnB artists that come to Canberra.

New Zealand born and raised Kim De La Haye aka DJ de la Haye, has been one of the most hardworking and energetic members of the Brisbane broken-beat scene, since moving to Australia in 2000.

With track selection, mixing, and a smile that sets any dancefloor ablaze, de la Haye is a regularly booked DJ, not to mention one of the scene’s leading promoters. Before discovering jungle in ’96, Kim’s early musical influences ranged from soul, funk, reggae and hiphop to rock, punk and metal. Perhaps in this, we find the blue print for her versatility. Whether its dub or ragga vibes, driving techstep darkness, complex drum choppage, or rolling liquid sounds, de la Haye’s drum’n’bass sets offer something for all tastes. All of this has not gone unnoticed by other promoters, as de la Haye continues to amass an impressive DJ resume. From being a regular at local events (eg Rude Bwoyz, Phat Albeats, BassCreepz, Praxis, Dub Thugs), Kim’s cross-genre appeal has also seen her feature at many non-DnB raves and festivals (eg Earthcore, ReAnimator, Mayhem, System 6, Island Vibe Reggae Festival, BBQ Breaks, Shhh, Deliverance, Manifest and Blah Blah Blah). She has played all around Australia and New Zealand, as well as opening the Feline stage at the 2009 Sun and Bass Festival in Sardinia Italy and the 2010 Paradise in Bali Festival.

What cannot be understated is Kim’s massive contribution to promoting in the Brisbane broken-beat community since 2002. In 2003 she formed the female DJ crew ‘Junglettes’ , in 2004 began the dub and jungle nights ‘Ragga’d’ and ‘Offshoots of Reggae’, and in 2005 started the hard DnB/Dubstep night ‘Rukus’ alongside SpeakerWrath. Through both collaborations with other local crews and on her own, de la Haye’s events have hosted most of the international DnB acts that have come through Brisbane over the past 7 years. This incredible and often solo effort has been a driving force and integral part in the growth of this scene in Brisbane. De La Haye also manages the Brizbass event mailing list and local broken-beat website http://www.brizbass.com/ that she founded in September 2008. Recently de la Haye branched out playing hiphop and dubstep sets, however her main focus for 2010 is to lend more time to production. Given the accomplishments and talent shown so far, where she will go from here no one can predict.

Much loved Canberra man and d’n'b DJ veteran Alex Beddows aka DJ Escha went missing in New Orleans over a week ago. Alex is a popular figure in the Canberra music scene, a veteran DJ, dedicated public servant, and loving friend, always exhibiting his trademark cheeky sense of humor.

…Since Alex has gone missing there has been an outpouring of love and support for Alex and his family from the Canberra community. We are very proud to host a fundraising initiative on Sunday 22 May to help raise funds for Alex’s family to assist with the search to locate him and bring him home safely.

From 4pm, some of Alex’s close friends will play and share music that Alex loves, and provide an opportunity for the community to to come together in solidarity and show their support for his family, during this immensely difficult time. DJs donating their time are Karton, Rees1, Ced Nada, Jemist, D’Opus and renowned vocalist Cris Clucas will also be performing.

Entry is $10 and donations bucket will be also be passed around for those who wish to make extra contribution, with all proceeds given to Alex’ family. Please come along to support the search for Alex, hear some fantastic music loved by the man and help keep up the fighting spirit of positivity for his family and friends.

Will Styles - MOS Dubstep Tour

With in tinnitus-inducing clothing, it’s always hard to miss Will Styles.

Classically trained from a young age, Will grew up playing violin, piano, French horn, xylophone, timpani, drums and glockenspiel. As a 16-year-old grunge fan, he discovered dance music whilst wearing 2 flannies, a Skid Row t-shirt and torn jeans. By the end of the night he was on the dance floor, waving his flannies around his head. He was hooked to the beats. Will tried and failed at mixing his first record just hours later. Since then, he has always endeavoured to play the rave, but it was only with the advent of DubRave that people began responding positively.

In 2001, he started FunkTrust with a couple of mates. It was all part of a plan to drink beer, meet girls and pay off gambling debts. Every Thursday for 6 years, FunkTrust played party-style hip hop, original uncut funk and block rocking’ breaks at The Globe and The Hunter Bar resulting in a statistically improbably high rate of Friday absenteeism. Artists who played at the club include the Nextmen, Malente, Mickey Finn, DJ Food, Freddy Fresh and Fort Knox Five. This success lead to Will’s first taste of festival whoredom: Big Day Out, Splendour in the Grass, Parklife, Future Music Festival, Field Day, Shore Thing, Sydney Festival First Night, Falls Festival. Will played Good Vibrations in a full panda suit, his FunkTrust-heterosexual-life-partner, Learned Hand, donned a full monkey suit. Will had arrived; he was rubbing shoulders with the great and good and entertained no-less a pop star than Sandi Thom (no, really.)

After a 2 year stint presenting Tuesday Sunsets on Sydney community station FBi, Radio FunkTrust started in 2007. Will & Aaron were invited to play before Silverchair at Triple J’s One Night Stand in Cowra, and of course brought their dancing panda with them. After the 2008 Hottest 100 broadcast, with at least one million people tuning-in, he managed to spill a full beer into a million-dollar mixing desk… It broke the desk but he didn’t get fired. Radio FunkTrust finished at the end of 2010 on a high, every week they reached 70,000 people with nothing better to do on a Friday night.

DubRave started in December 2009, and having thrown parties all over Australia, they have landed a regular home at Sydney’s Chinese Laundry. It was launched with the same underground aesthetic, and the same flagrant disregard of genre that made FunkTrust such a success. This time, however, the sounds focused on bass music, particularly the nascent sound of dubstep. They’ve hosted parties for South Rakkas Crew, Doorly, DJ MK (Dizzee Rascal’s tour DJ) and Nu:tone & MC Wrec. The biggest nights always featured local line-ups, a testament to the strength of the brand and the depth of the talent.

At the start of 2011, Will represented the DubRave sound around Australia with MC Hayley Boa on the Boiler Room tour. Their show injected bass music directly in the ears of over 100,000 ravers in just 6 shows, including 2 capacity performances in Sydney of 35,000 each.

Chosen to mix Ministry of Sound’s “Sound of Dubstep” compilation alongside Israel’s Borgore, Will is to tour around Australia throughout May and June. Appearing on the mix; Paul Mac personally approved Will’s remix Itch-e & Scratch-e’s Sweetness and Light; the first remix allowed since its release in 1995. The compilation features tunes from Chase & Status, Skrillex, Rusko and Sub Focus, plus original Will Styles productions and tunes from his label, DubRave. Will’s partner in DubRave is MC Shureshock, Australia’s No. 1 MC, a certified raver and all-round party rocker.

ShockOne @ Trinity Bar - Apr 30th

Hailing from Perth the epicenter of the Australasian drum and bass scene, ShockOne aka Karl Thomas is fast becoming one of D&B’s major talents.

He writes his music in a sweat box of a studio in an industrial area with air con blasting through a random door. He grew a beard this year which has been very well received.

2009 has seen Shockone come of age with the release of ‘The Shockone EP’, featuring the chart topping ‘Polygon’. This tune received major air play world wide with high rotation play listing on Australia’s Triple J radio and Radio 1′s Annie Mac penning it as ‘The biggest drum and bass tune out’. The EP’s three drum and bass tunes achieved the top 3 spots on beatports drum and bass chart, and ‘Adachigahara’s Theme’ stayed at number 1 on the dubstep chart for over a month. Following this Shockone released his remix of the Brookes Brothers epic ‘Crackdown’ on Viper recordings ‘Acts of madmen LP’ which was labeled “Album of the Week” on Zane Lowe BBC Radio 1. Shockone’s collaborations with Phetsta, ‘The Sun 2009′ and ‘Cyclones’ have also received high rotation on radio world wide.

2009 also saw Shockone take out Best tune of the year at the Perth dance music awards for the third year running with ‘Polygon’, as well as best drum and bass dj and best broken beat producer for the second year in a row.

2010 is set to be a colossal year for ShockOne with a full-length album in the works

LOW FREQZ is Canberra’s premier ‘bass music’ night, aimed at showcasing both new and classic music from a number of sub-bass oriented genres, with a strong emphasis on bass and beats. Think Dubstep, Grime, UK Funky, Future Garage, D’n'B, Hip Hop, IDM, Glitch, as well some proper wonky beats.
